Life-Support
The Re-Cyc
Each Church has a Re-Cyc machine, where bodies, waste matter and other biological left overs are dumped to be re-cycled. Extra sythetic vitamins imported from off-world or chemical factories in other Spires need to be added. This re-cycled matter is food for most Hivers and is known as Synth, Soil, Fud or Block. It is cuboid in shape, bitter and acrid in taste, flaky and hard in texture and greenish-brown in colour. It is disributed every Mass on the 8th day of the week, in weekly rations. weekly rations cost 1 credit per person. The congregation are expected to bring their wate disposal units and dead bodies to church before Mass for re-cycling. Not to do so is illegal and punishable by excommunication. When bodies are dispensed with a short ceremony for the passing soul takes place.

The Re-cyc contains enzymes and chemicals that break-down the biological matter and disinfect it so that it is edable. The Church often adds other substances to Block, depending on the congregation. Violent parishes receive sedatives in their Block. Lazy parishes have their food spiked with stimulants. A mild form of mind-control drug is used in all Block to aid indoctrination during Church ceremonies. Because parishes are so big, Mass takes place in each of the 4 cycles during the day.
Fungus Farms
In the higher levels are the spire where there is less pollutions and some naturl light from thick trans-plasteel windows filters, wild fungus may grow. A certain amount of moisture is necessary, so typcially these farms are near the HeatSink and its steam. The fungus is harvested from the walls it grows upon. Only rich Hivers from the upper levels can afford to eat such nutrious natural food. It is a luxury and can be stuff, made into soup, biscuits and a variety of other things. for the rich it partially supplements Block.
Water Condensers & Extractors
This is the most important food system, without it, all would perish. The water is collected as steam from deep below the crust via the HeatSink and then cooled by various chemicals into liquid. The most common method of gaining water though is via dead bodies. When brought to the Churches for Re-Cycling the bodies are process and water extracted fro them. The water is then distributed in rations during weekly Mass for those who can afford it. Only the rich can afford the Condensed water, which is rich in minerals and has not be treated with disinfectant.Air Filters & Screens
These are located at the top of the Spire where the shafts and vents let in real light and air through screens and filters. THe air from outside has to be filtered to be breathable, non-toxic and non-radioactive. It is circulated via the fans and vents which burrow irratically throughout the Spire levels. If ever the air-filters broke down the Spire would be slowly poisoned by the fumes from outside and irradiated. Only those with top-range respirators and atomicaly seal-suits would survive.
As the air moves further down the levels of the Spire it becomes less pure, mixing in with the Spires own fumes and having already been breathed and re-breathed countless times. THe top of the Spire is lijke mountain air compared to the foetid mists of the UnderHive.
The Church does not control the Air Filters. Tech-Clan Vlatava own & maintain them.
Pumps, Gutter Shafts and Gas Drains
These are located at ground (or rather, ash) level, just above the UnderHive. They pumps out toxic waste, filth, poisons, ash & radioactive material into the UnderHive and outside the SpireShell into the Ash-Wastes below. Several UnderHive tunnels are really just drains for waste and those who use them will eventually die from the rivers of poison that run down there. Over the years a reat SlagHeap has built up outside the SpireShell & has eaten through it, compromising this defense on the lowest level.. It protects this hole itself to some degree, though it is not getting so high it may block the pumps. The pumps will then be useless and will hav to be moved a level higher or abandoned.
The pumps are necessary to life in the spire, otherwise the populace would be overwhelmed by the Industries pollution. The gas drains are connected to the vents and fans that blow outward of the chimnys. If the chimnys or vents were blocked the Spire would act like a slow and gigantic gas chamber.
