How to Play

The less your players know about the W40K universe the better. The more familiar and experienced they are with RPGs, then even better. These pages are devoted to an ongoing campaign, a long-term game. Games are linked by character and plot so gang fights are all unpinned and affect each other. nothing is done in isolation. There is a sustained development of plots and sub-plots, involving a wide selection of characters who have their own agendas, personalities, abilities and resources, much like a movie, comic strip, novel and some computer games. The players are in control of a single gang, typically 5 to 15 strong. The GM is in control of an entire population, a world, a galaxy. The story line moves according to how the player characters (PCs) interact with the GM's non-player characters (NPCs). This makes for a non-linear game which is complex, time consuming and lots of fun. PCs will no doubt make allies and enemies of the NPCs. The more thorough the characters are detailed, and the more complicated the plot, the more interesting the game is. RPgamers who are used to simple "hack and slash" plots and 2 dimensional characters may find these concepts difficult to put into realistic motion at first, but the more one plays, the easier it becomes to empathise with the characters and create interesting plots. (This kind of game-play was pioneered by Hogshead's "Power Behind the Throne" as part of the "Enemy Within campaign".) Mainly personality, rather than events, move the story. Below are links taking you to the pages which contain information on where the PCs are, the background to the game, and possible groups and characters they might meet. The players will need to know some of this background. They must not know other things. This is evident in the descriptions, though the GM has descretion as to how much the PCs know about Necromunda and the Imperium of Mankind, what their social class is and how good their access to resources are.
